Kampot, Cambodia

After 4 relaxing days it was time today goodbye to the island and the folks I met here. I took the early ferry back to Sihanoukville (also known as "Shitville", one of the ugliest cities I've visited in this trip), and I made it to Kampot before 2pm. I spent the rest of the day exploring the charming city and its riverside. After several days of partying in the island, I very much needed a quiet day and an early night.

Koh Rong Sanloem, Cambodia

I haven't been so lucky with the weather in the island so far. Most of the days were overcast, and we even got some rain. On the bright side, the mix of bad weather and unreliable WiFi gave me lots of time to chat and mingle with the people from the hostel. I hanged out with some amazing travelers, some of whom I had already met in the south of Laos or in Battambang. Serendipity at its finest.

Koh Rong Sanloem, Cambodia

Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanluem are the two main Cambodian islands. Koh Rong is famous for its nightlife while the other is ideal for chilling and slow living. However, in low season Koh Rong is not that busy, so travelers come to Koh Rong Sanluem instead, creating the perfect balance between party and chill.

Other than Koh Rong Sanluem's main beach, you have Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach on the other side of the island. Today I explored both of them. Strolling across the jungle in the heart of the island was more fun than I had imagined.

Koh Rong Sanloem, Cambodia

Today I headed to the islands south of Cambodia. After 7h on a bus, and a 45min ferry I arrived to Koh Rong Sanluem. I hadn't seen the beach since Bali, a month and a half ago, so I was really missing the #islandvibes.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Today was a grim day, as I visited the prison and torture center, and later the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge, the dictatorship that ruled and terrorized Cambodia for 4 years. "Never will we forget the crimes committed during the Democratic Kampuchea Regime" reads the message at the memorial of the genocide that took place between 1975 and 1979. These visits triggered a lot of emotions, but a constant thought lingered: why had I never learned about this?

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

I recently learned basic counting in Khmer (1 to 10, 100, 1000). It's crazy how that tiny effort can completely change your interactions with the locals. They love it! Asking prices and bargaining went from being a struggle to a lot of laughs (mostly from their side). Today I walked around Phnom Penh, exploring the busy Central Market and the majestic Royal Palace.
